FALL 2022: Over-30 Legends: Monday: Hot Goyle Summer

Goyle turn it on late to win championship
Got That Dawg In Us 44 Hot Goyle Summer 47

The stage was set Monday night for the final showdown for the Over30 Legends championship between the #1 seed Got That Dawg in Us and the #5 seed Hot Goyle Summer. Back in week 5, when these two teams previously met, a shorthanded Goyle took care of business 60-51, behind Weinstein’s 32 points. Dawg got through the playoffs and survived missing their best player, Kap, in the first round by edging out a victory against Beavers and then dismantling the Unholy Alliance in the second round. Goyle has been red hot throughout the playoffs, blowing out Team Slick in the first round and winning a tough matchup against Ghost of Nutso in the second round. Dawg was dealt a tough blow in the second round, losing captain and spiritual leader JET to a nasty ankle injury. Jet would be in the house and miced up for this game, providing expert coaching and motivation from the sidelines. Despite this, I had Dawg as favorited to win with a 4.5 line as Kap has taken home two consecutive OLD chips and his team remained the team to beat here.

Both teams came out methodical and looked to get the best shots possible, playing at a glacial pace. Weinstein and Kodra got a couple buckets for Goyle and Shaffer hit a 3, and it was still 6-6 after 7 minutes of play. Many had predicted this game as a rock fight, and that’s what it was shaping up to be, with both teams failing to get easy looks and having to work their way to free throw line. Weinstein got a putback to go and B-Rob would find JMul for a 3 and it was 13-10 Dawgs. Weinstein and BRob traded buckets and Chas nails a captain’s 3 and it was finally a tie game 15-15 with 2 minutes left in the first half. Jmul hits a big man’s O-board put back and Weinstein got a jumper followed by Kodra running the floor and skying over his defender for the bucket. Goyle would foul Shaffer with less than 10 seconds to go but he would miss both at the line, and Goyle went into the half up 2.

Noticeably absent from scoring in the first half, Kap opened it up in the second period getting a dime from Shaffer on a break. Jmul got to the line and hit both and Kap had another 2 and Dawgs regained the lead. Weinstein answered but B-Rob came through with a big And-1 to make it a 4 point Dawg lead with 15:00 to go. At this point the urgency kicked in for both teams and the pace intensified. Weinstein was getting buckets and to the line for Goyle and Kodra would hit him with a beautiful dime and Goyle made a little run. B-Rob answered with a 2 and Kap found Shaffer for a big time 3 keep it close, with Dawgs leading by 5. Bohnaker got a strong And-1 to go, Kap got a bucket and Kodra got 2. Chas steps into a clutch 3 to give Goyle a 1 point lead with 6 minutes left. Weinstein got a midcourt steal for a transition layup and Kap would get to the line and hit both, but Dawgs still trailed by 1. Weinstein got to the line and hit both, Kodra got a bucket and Kap goes 2/2 from the line and it was still a 1 point game with time winding down. Kodra makes a great assist to Bohnaker for 2, and JMul hts a massive clutch 3 to keep it within 2. At this point Dawgs had to foul and they sent Weinstein to the line, 2/2 and Bohnaker who would miss one. With Dawgs down 3, Kap gets the ball with under 10 seconds to go and as he is bringing the ball across midcourt, he was controversially called for a carry, which sealed the victory for Goyle. Congrats to Chas and his continues success this year, after winning BDraft this summer, he caps it off with an Over30 chip. Goyle proved to be a well-balanced team that clicked both offensively and defensively. Looking forward to seeing everyone back for the winter session.

Finals MVP – Mike Weinstein – 22 points including a perfect 8/8 from the free throw line was key in this defensively orientated game.
